Massimiliano Toni graduated in Organ from Conservatorio di S. Cecilia in Rome, with L. Celeghin. Before his degree he was awarded two scholarships at the National Organ Competition in Noale (VE – Italy).
In Switzerland he studied with Jesper B. Christensen and Rudi Lutz at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he was in charge of the opera class in 1997/1998. He worked with A. De Marchi as musical assistant from 1997 to 2008. He has collaborated as musical assistant, harpsichordist or organist with conductors such as Alberto Zedda, Jesús Lopez-Cobos, Victor Pablo Perez, Attilio Cremonesi, Konrad Junghaenel, Ivor Bolton. From 2003 to 2007 he was René Jacobs’ musical assistant and played with him in music halls such as Berlin Philarmonie (Berlin), Barbican Hall (Londra), Lincon Centre (New York), Theatre des Champs Elysées (Paris), Palais des Beaux Arts (Bruxelles), Palau de la Musica (Valencia), Accademia di Santa Cecilia – Città della Musica, Konzerthaus (Freiburg).

He has been leading the ensemble La Terza Prattica since 2005, creating many productions such as: Effetto Venezia, Et in Arcadia ego ovvero il Guercino tra sacro ed arcano, Mozart e Novara: processo ad una lettera, In Tympano et Sono, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Lʼincoronazione di Poppea: studio per 5 cantanti ed un attore, BaroccArmonica: concerto inusuale per lirica antica. He conducted La Serva Scaltra by J.A. Hasse, (Teatro Coccia, Novara – live DVD edited by Kiccomusic), La Diana Schernita by G. Cornacchioli (Teatro Jovellanos, Gijon), W.A. Mozart’ Così fan tutte (Teatro Sociale di Como, tournée in major italian opera houses – Operadomani project), Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by C. Monteverdi (Oslo Opera House).

He conducted Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea by the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik (Barockoper:Jung), directed by Jakob Peter Messer. In 2008/20009 he composed Orfeo: a ba-rock opera, a new arrangement of Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi. This daring experiment was premiered at XII Festival de Musica Antigua de Gijòn, Spain and was very well received by both the public and the critic. He was invited to teach thorough bass at the Early Music Department of E.S.M.U.C. in Barcelona, and
founded Nuova Fabbrica dell’Opera Barocca at Istituto Civico Musicale Brera in Novara, where he was Artistic Director from 2011 to 2013
